US Capital Passes Historic Renewable Electricity Bill

US Capital Passes Renewable Electricity Bill

In December of 2018, the Washington D.C. city council voted unanimously in favor of a bill that would legislate that power companies in the area have to generate 100% of their energy from renewable sources such as wind and solar by 2032. This is an enormous step for the city, and there is hope that other cities will follow its lead.

At Plug It In Solar, we believe legislation like this is the future for sustainable energy. As one of the best solar companies in California, we hope that this trend of 100% renewable energy sources continues and expands before the worst effects of climate change are felt. So, here’s the recap on this momentous occasion.

Main points in the bill

● 100% of energy sold in the city to be from renewable sources. As stated above, this is the big point. This means that traditional fossil fuels like coal and natural gas won’t be used at all, marking a big step forward in the environmental movement. At least 10% of this energy must be solar by 2041. Not normally known for its constant sun, this should prove solar’s viability outside of the Southwest.

● Stricter emissions standards for buildings. New construction standards will be raised, and older commercial buildings will need to be retrofitted for energy efficiency.

● Lower emissions for transportation. The bill stipulates that by 2045, all public

transportation will need to be from electric vehicles. It also offers a host of incentives for consumers in the city to buy low-emission vehicles, while providing authority to the mayor to impose taxes on fuel if Maryland or Virginia also impose said tax.

● Assistance for those with low income. Fees will be collected on those using natural gas and other fossil fuels. These fees will be put in a fund to assist low-income households with their utility bills. This assures that everyone, rich or poor, has access to green energy.

Other cities have set these kinds of goals, but usually these are smaller cities where they seem more attainable. Washington D.C. has the 20th largest population in the United States, and having them lead the way in 100% renewable energy should have other larger cities following suit.
